First 30 Days

You're here! We strongly encourage you to participate in the following activities in order to learn more about your role, your team, and the Institute.
  1. Attend Begin@Caltech
You will participate in Begin@Caltech on your first day of employment. During this virtual meeting, you will receive a high-level campus overview and complete several compliance-related tasks.

  2. Present Form I-9 Documents
Make an appointment with Recruiting or International Scholar Services to complete Section 2 of Form I-9. This must be completed within three business days of your date of hire.

  3. Update personal information
Visit access.caltech.edu to ensure your personal information is accurate.

  4. Determine transportation needs
Contact the parking office to obtain a parking pass or learn about other commuter services.

  5. Complete trainings
Complete the Prevention of Unlawful Harassment Training as well as any job-specific training(s).

  6. Review Institute Policies
Take a few minutes to read the 11 Institute Policies. These policies are applicable to staff, faculty, postdocs, and students. All Caltech community members are responsible for knowing what policies exist and what expectations the policies outline.

  7. Participate in Benefits Orientation and enroll
If your position is benefits-eligible, you will receive an invitation from our Benefits Department to attend one of their virtual, bi-weekly benefits orientations. You also can meet 1:1 with one of our benefits specialists by appointment. If you are a new hire and would like to elect medical, dental and/or vision coverage (as well as certain other benefits), you must enroll within 31 days of your date of hire. Click here to view our Summary of Caltech Benefits. Have any questions regarding benefits? You may reach our Benefits Department at [email protected] or (626) 395-6443.

  8. Attend HR Connect
At Caltech, we believe in attracting the most talented people and providing the resources they need to pursue their best ideas. HR Connect is a monthly orientation where you will be introduced to campus resources, vendors, and other members of the Caltech community. You will receive an invitation for HR Connect following your start date. HR Connect meetings generally take place virtually the first Wednesday of each month and are hosted by members of the HR team.

  9. Meet with colleagues
Schedule time to introduce yourself to team members and/or other contacts across campus. Grab a beverage at the Red Door Marketplace or a bite to eat at Browne Dining Hall using the preloaded $10 dining credit on your Caltech ID card, courtesy of the Recruiting team and Dining Services.
