The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us personally and professionally. The Caltech community has come together in positive ways that few communities have been able to – essential workers kept our campus safe and many of us moved to remote work. Research vital to understanding the SARS-CoV-2 virus was able to continue and JPL successfully landed Perseverance on Mars, to highlight just a few of the many accomplishments. We showed resilience, flexibility and kindness to one another and those in our community.
I am excited that we can now move to planning for a phased return of more employees to campus, starting in the summer of 2021. Beginning June 1, fully vaccinated employees who have been working remotely may start to return to their onsite work locations. Access to onsite work locations is allowable in accordance with local public health requirements for worksites, and subject to discussion with and approval from an individual's manager or supervisor. Human Resources also must verify that an individual's vaccination status has been confirmed through the COVID-19 Vaccination Documentation application.
By expanding on-campus activity over the summer, the Institute intends to facilitate the transition of all campus units to in-person operation by September 7, 2021. At that time, we expect in-person campus operations to function at full capacity, albeit with an understanding that this will include increased flexibility in work arrangements and schedules, potentially involving a mix of onsite and remote work. All such arrangements will be subject to public health conditions at the time.
The Human Resources offices will continue to restrict walk-in traffic, while most of our employees will continue working remotely. We will provide services by phone and email and can arrange Zoom meetings for employees or retirees who would like to meet "in person". All services will be available, and all hotlines will be staffed.
