Welcome to Lead@Caltech!

Caltech Human Resources will be offering leadership workshops for all Caltech leaders. Whether you are in a new leadership role or have years of experience, these training sessions will speak to you. Join us as we hand you the keys to unlock your strengths.

  • You must currently be a supervisor or manager to register for the leadership training sessions.
  • Sessions will be offered in-person and via Zoom.
  • Sessions will have a minimal fee of $20 to cover workshop materials.
  • Seats are limited. If you are interested in attending a workshop, sign up now.
  • Home in on your leadership skills.
  • Networking opportunities with Caltech colleagues.
  • Get to know your HR team and other Caltech resources.
  • Familiarize yourself with Caltech policy and protocols.
  • Refreshments included for those attending in-person.

We would appreciate a minimum 48-hour notice if you are unable to attend a workshop for which you have registered. This will allow us to contact individuals who are on the waiting list. Please note that your PTA will be charged the $20 course fee if the appropriate cancellation notice is not provided. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Performance Management *Back by Popular Demand*

Description: Learn how to address roles and responsibilities within your team, set clear end-result expectations, and gain a clear understanding of the Caltech performance management process.

The Do's and Don'ts of Timekeeping

Date: Thursday, May 16, 2024
In-Person: Hameetman Multipurpose Room, 9am-10:30am

Facilitators: Payroll and Employee & Organizational Development
Description: Timekeeping accuracy is critical. We will review the importance of submitting timecards on time, what timecard codes mean, the role of the payroll activity monitor (PAM) and supervisors, and key highlights of our time keeping policy (PM 11-3). In addition, we will discuss your responsibility in maintaining the integrity of your employee's timecards.

Know the Rules: Leave & Workers' Compensation

Description: Learn the basics of leaves and workers' compensation. This session will help supervisors and managers understand their role when someone has need for a leave of absence or accommodation including work related, or when a workplace injury is reported.

Coach the Person, Not the Problem Pt. II *NEW*

Description: In this session, supervisors and managers will learn to adopt a coaching mindset, essential for effective leadership. This session aims to equip participants with the skills to reframe perspectives and manage challenging emotions during coaching interactions. This session is structured to further develop managers' coaching competencies, enabling them to support their teams more effectively through insightful problem-solving strategies.

You must have attended Coach the Person, Not the Problem Pt. I to be part of this session.

How Caltech Determines Pay for Employees

Date: Thursday, August 22, 2024

Facilitators: Compensation and Employee & Organizational Development
Description: Learn how the Compensation team develops salary ranges for each job on campus. We will review the job classification structure and how we gather compensation market data. We will also review California's pay transparency law that requires disclosure of salary ranges to employees and job applicants.

Description: Learning how to manage stress and use tools for self-awareness can be keys to your leadership success. Engage in building skills to better manage your workload, respond to unexpected challenges, and feel on top of your game at work and at home.
