Lead@Caltech

Lead@Caltech is a leadership program offered by Caltech Human Resources, specifically designed for current supervisors and managers. Whether you're transitioning into a new leadership role or have years of experience, our training sessions are tailored to support and elevate your leadership journey.


  • You must currently be a supervisor or manager to register for the leadership training sessions.
  • Sessions will be offered in-person and via Zoom.
  • Sessions facilitated by Caltech departments will have a minimal fee of $20 to cover workshop materials.
  • Sessions facilitated by external facilitators will have a minimal fee of $30 to cover workshop materials and facilitator fees.
  • Seats are limited. If you are interested in attending a workshop, sign up now.
  • Home in on your leadership skills.
  • Networking opportunities with Caltech colleagues.
  • Get to know your HR team and other Caltech resources.
  • Familiarize yourself with Caltech policy and protocols.
  • Refreshments included for those attending in-person.

We would appreciate a minimum 48-hour notice if you are unable to attend a workshop for which you have registered. This will allow us to contact individuals who are on the waiting list. Please note that your PTA will be charged the $20 or $30 course fee if the appropriate cancellation notice is not provided. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Riding the 2025 Rollercoaster

Smooth Starts and Graceful Goodbyes: Mastering the Art of Onboarding and Offboarding

Description: Onboarding an employee is one of the most critical steps. Not only is it their first impression of your department or division, but also a great opportunity to set clear expectations, build relationships, and introduce a great work environment. In this session, you'll learn how to integrate new team members, as well as learn how to effectively offboard employees who are leaving the Institute.

It Doesn't Have to be Scary: Navigating Difficult Conversations

Time Matters: Understanding Your Role in Wage & Hour Compliance

Description: Accurate timekeeping and adherence to wage and hour regulations are critical to ensuring fair employee compensation and avoiding penalties. In this session, we will review best practices for timekeeping, addressing timekeeping challenges, handling breaks, and more.

The Feedback Formula: Steps to Successful Performance Management (Repeat)

Description: Learn how to address roles and responsibilities within your team, set clear end-result expectations, and gain a clear understanding of the Caltech performance management process.
Please note that this is a repeat course that is formally known as "Performance Management."

The Feedback Formula: Steps to Successful Performance Management 2.0

Description: In Part 1, you learned about defining roles, setting clear expectations, and other strategies for handling performance management. Join us in this part 2 workshop to put your skills to work. In this hands-on workshop you will have an opportunity to practice documenting, setting clear expectations and, effectively implementing proactive steps.

Leave It to Us: Understanding Disability and Leave Policies

Date: August 6, 2025

Description: Learn the basics of leaves and workers' compensation. This session will help supervisors and managers understand their role when someone has the need for a leave of absence or accommodation including work related, or when a workplace injury is reported.

In this session, the Employee and Organizational Development team will walk you through some of the most frequently asked-about policies. We'll cover key policies that all managers should know.
