Lead@Caltech

Lead@Caltech is a leadership program offered by Caltech Human Resources, specifically designed for current supervisors and managers. Whether you're transitioning into a new leadership role or have years of experience, our training sessions are tailored to support and elevate your leadership journey.


  • You must currently be a supervisor or manager to register for the leadership training sessions.
  • Sessions will be offered in-person and via Zoom.
  • Sessions facilitated by Caltech departments will have a minimal fee of $20 to cover workshop materials.
  • Sessions facilitated by external facilitators will have a minimal fee of $30 to cover workshop materials and facilitator fees.
  • Seats are limited. If you are interested in attending a workshop, sign up now.
  • Home in on your leadership skills.
  • Networking opportunities with Caltech colleagues.
  • Get to know your HR team and other Caltech resources.
  • Familiarize yourself with Caltech policy and best practices.
  • Refreshments included for those attending in-person.

We would appreciate a minimum 48-hour notice if you are unable to attend a workshop for which you have registered. This will allow us to contact individuals who are on the waiting list. Please note that your PTA will be charged the $20 or $30 course fee if the appropriate cancellation notice is not provided. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Leave It to Us: Understanding Disability and Leave Policies (Bi-annual Session)

Description: Learn the essentials of leaves and workers' compensation in a dynamic, practical session designed for supervisors and managers. You will gain a clear understanding of your role and responsibilities when an employee requests a leave of absence, needs a workplace accommodation, or reports an injury in the workplace. Expect actionable guidance, real world scenarios, and the confidence to navigate these situations with consistency and care.

Smooth Starts: Ensuring Effective Onboarding

Description: Onboarding an employee is one of the most critical steps in ensuring the success of your new team member. Not only is it their first impression of your department or division, but also a great opportunity to set clear expectations, build relationships, and introduce a great work environment. Graceful Goodbyes: Successful Transitions for All

Description: Saying farewell to an employee is just as important as welcoming them. A thoughtful offboarding process not only ensures a smooth transition for departing staff, but also ensures a transfer of departmental knowledge, reinforces organizational values, and preserves positive relationships. In this session, you'll learn how to navigate departures with clarity and care, supporting employees through their final steps, maintaining continuity for your team, and creating an experience that leaves the door open for future connections.

Peer Today, Manager Tomorrow

Description: The transition from an individual contributor to a supervisor or manager role is significant and often can leave a new leader with many questions. This session will help new leaders navigate the switch by equipping them with the information to understand what their new role will entail and the skills necessary to effectively carry out their new responsibilities.

The Feedback Formula Workshop: Steps to Successful Performance Management (Returning Due to High Interest)

Description: In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to effectively communicate roles and responsibilities within your team, set clear end-result expectations, address performance gaps, and gain a clear understanding of the Caltech performance management process.
