Caltech's Strategy Implementation Group (SIG) has launched a campuswide voluntary recreational program featuring a series of 5K run/walk/race events through the end of 2020.
The program aims to promote wellness by encouraging members of the Caltech community to get active with friends and family by participating in one 5K race each month in the Southern California area. Human Resources will subsidize the cost of entry fees to the races selected by the program.
Diana Jergovic, vice president for strategy implementation, says the program "focuses on 5K events so that everyone can participate to their level of enjoyment. Some can walk it, some can race it for a personal best; some races have 1-mile kiddie runs associated, allow strollers, let you bring your dogs, include other distances (like 10Ks, half marathons, or marathons), or have associated bike events."
But even those who don't want to walk or run are welcome, Jergovic notes: "These events are great fun and have a lot of positive energy associated with them. It also is so great for runners to look to the sidelines and see friends cheering them."
The program's first race was the 42nd annual Firecracker Run in Chinatown on February 15-16.
