Forbes has ranked Caltech first among America's best midsize employers in the magazine's 2023 rankings, which were released on February 15.
The publication surveyed 45,000 workers at organizations with 1,000–5,000 employees, asking whether they would recommend their current employer to friends and family (on a scale of zero to 10), and to list another employer they would recommend. Employers with the most recommendations made it into Forbes' top 500, and Caltech earned the number one spot.
"It is an honor to be named the number one midsize employer in America by Forbes, and Caltech employees should take pride in this achievement," says Julia McCallin, associate vice president for human resources and chief human resources officer. "Our employee community supports one another with respect and care in a way that few workplaces do. It's this thoughtful approach that contributes to Caltech's amazing culture and mission."
The magazine noted that Caltech provides competitive salaries and health benefits, tuition reimbursement, hybrid work options, and an emphasis on work-life balance, all of which attract and retain talented employees. It also highlighted the large number of employees honored each year for celebrating milestone work anniversaries, with many reaching 10-year, 20-year, and even 45-year anniversaries.
"People really have a community here," says Kylene Barker, Caltech's director of employment and recruiting services, "and they stay with Caltech."
